James

 TURLEY
OF
SANGAMON COUNTY, ILLINOIS

''^'^ 10. JAMESl TURLEY was born 8 January 1761 and died 4 June 1836 ,>,
in Sangamon County, Illinois. On 10 flay 1781 he married Agnes Kirby."^
She was born 3 May 1763 and died 26 December 1832.

Thus the descendants of "Sangamon James" Turley began to separate.
Perhaps more than any other of the eighteenth century Turleys, this
James typifies the restless pioneer spirit of the westward movement.
He had been moving on since he left Fairfax County, Virginia, when
he was seventeen. His last move was to Sangamon County, Illinois,
when he was fifty-nine. The motivation was surely largely economic
but the courage cannot be denied. James Turley lived in four states
and the fractional number of his descendants now known range over
the entire country.

In 1812 Charles Turley was first taxed in Montgomery County, Kentucky,
and he continued to be taxed through 1822.181 Only in 1821
was he taxed as a landowner. The land, 100 acres on Harper's Creek,
entered by Peter Harper, was actually owned by his father, James Turley,
having been purchased from Betty Harper 23 August 1803.182
On 14 December 1822 Charles Turley of Montgomery County, Kentucky,
appointed his brother, John Turley, his attorney to transact his
business in Kentucky and to sell a tract of land in Arkansas, purchased
by them jointly from Giles Ro.l83 if Charles Turley and John
Turley had considered moving to Arkansas, the plan was abandoned.
They may have bought the land purely for speculative purposes.
In 1823 Charles Turley and his family of six children settled in
Sangamon County, Illinois, four miles from the present village of
Elkhart in the present Logan County.184 Two more children were subsequently
born. Charles Turley entered land in Elkhart Township in
1828.185
A volunteer in the Black Hawk War of 1831-1832, Charles Turley
served in Captain Dawson's Company, Old Battalion Spies, Whitesides
Brigade, Mounted Volunteers of the Illinois Militia. 86
Charles Turley made nine purchases at the sale of his father's
estate 1 July 1836: one lot of old iron, a pair of "Speckticles,"
a jug, a side of "Soal" leather, a "Powder Gourd," a pair of bgJtchles,
two barrels of lime, a basket of sundries and a razor.1°'
Considered one of the pioneers of Logan County, Illinois, it was
said of Charles Turley, "Mr. Turley had his share of trials and hardships
incident to the life of a pioneer. In his last days he united
himself with the Christian church...He was a genial generous-hearted
man and had a host of warm friends."188

Our Turley Danner Family Tree

Draft Outline

Roundup Connection Turley's
When we first moved to Billings, Montana we were often asked if we were related to the Turley's up at Roundup.

My Grandfather had always said, "If they are a Turley we are related"
I found this not to be as true as we thought.
Family History became a great hobby as a result of this question.  Ironically I've not been able the find the direct connection to those Roundup Turley's. There are Northern Wyoming Turleys and Western Montana Turleys related to us but I have never figured out the connection to the Musselshell County /  Roundup Turleys to us or them. I found one Turley born in Billings but she was my 6th cousin and doesn't seem to be related to the Roundup Turleys. I have evidence the Montana Turley's immigrated via Canada some 4 or 5 generations ago.

Something unusual about our family and the reason for this blog is the number of immigrants that are Pre-Revolutionary War. I did not realize that most immigrants in most families were less than 3 or 4 generations. Recent politics reaffirms to me that we are all immigrants here in the New World and morally have no right to this land. Simply put, we took it from the Native Americans. You will hear me reference New World Immigrants as this is often the case with our Family. The Graphic below outlines our Grandparents and Great Grandparents

Zeno Turley

BIRTH 17 MAR 1870  St Francois Co,Mo

DEATH 8 OCT 1914  Jonesboro, AR

My Great Grandfather, I never met. He died when my Grandfather Turley was 11 years old.

CONT....

Maud Westover

BIRTH 10 OCT 1874  Missouri

DEATH 5 DECEMBER 1966  Jonesboro, Craighead, Arkansas, United States

My great Grandmother Maud Westover Turley was born in 1874 and her mother Lavina Yeargain was born in 1854 in or near Irondale, Missouri. Maud is 6 years old in the 1860 Census of Washington County, Town of Irondale, MO.
So it's apparent that the families Westover, Yeargains and Turley's were some of the earliest Pioneers in the southern Missouri area. Kansas City, Missouri was not incorporated until 10 years later and Missouri had only been a State since 1820. The population took a tremendous surge in 1849 due to the Gold Rush out west.  Many farmers making their way west took a more reasonable approach and became settlers in Missouri rather than prospectors in California because of the realization of Pioneer Travel and the wonderful farmland to be had. The rapid population growth was facilitated by treaties that extinguished Indian land titles, with settlers attracted by the abundance of high quality inexpensive land, and the easy access provided by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Turley's established an Indian School just south of Bonne Terre, Missouri and another Cherokee Indian School in what is now the town of Turley that is surrounded by Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have not been able to determine who or how we are related to those Oklahoma Turley's.

This is the area in Missouri were the families farmed as well as mined the Lead near Bonne Terre, MO.

Most of our immediate family now lives in the west even though both of my blended familiy Turley and Danner hail from the St Louis area. We live in Montana that just now in the year 2000 has a population of just over 1 million.  Missouri in 1850 had a 174% increase in population from 1840. Even so, Turley's, Westover's and Yeargain's were some of the earliest Pioneers in southern Missouri. Potosi, Bonne Terre, Irondale, Farmington among other towns

The Immigrants:

John I Turley arrived 1676 in Maryland
1649–1715 age
Birth 1649 Newry, Armagh, Ireland -
side note: I went thru Newry in 2022 but did not stop as I was part of a tour.
Death 1715 Stafford, Stafford, Virginia, United States
7th Great Grandfather

Rev. Andrew Yeargin Sr. arrival uncertain
Yeargain Yeargan Yeargin?
( the family name was originally Prussian and was spelled Jürgen? ) This was my great grandmothers mother's line and I include it because of the interesting history of our families in the Southern Missouri area and because of early immigration. There were three Families who have ties there. Turleys, Westover's and Yeargan's.
Birth BET. 1717-1735 Brecon, Breconshire, Wales or Selesia, Germany
Death 6 JUN 1807 Greenville, South Carolina, United States
6th Great Grandfather via Eber C. and Lavinia Yeargan Turley

Jonah Westover arrived about 1639
This immigrant's grandson will side with the crown and will be ostracized. The Westover family (his son) later removes to Potosi, Missour. Just one of the reasons for being early Pioneers in Missouri.
Jonas Westover the father arrival best guess is 14 years of age but
Jonas Westover entered America through Massachusetts Bay, as that was the most commonly used entry at that time to the New England area.  He had relatives there when he arrived.  One relative was Jane Westover who had married 20 November 1647 William Williams.  Jane lived in the Simsbury area of Connecticut at the time of Jonas' arrival in Windsor.
1628–1708 age 79
Birth 4 MAY 1628 Taunton,Somerset,England
Death 15 JAN 1708 Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut
8th Great Grandfather via Granna Turley (nee Westover)

Note: The name Jonah was carried on with Jonah Michael Granberg

Johann Wilhelm 'William' Labarre arrrival 1754 Philadelphia
Birth MAY 1704 Alsace-Lorraine, France
Death 6 FEB 1761 Mount Bethel, Northampton, Pennsylvania
7th Great Grandfather -via Eunice

Col. William Goodgion arrived 1760
unsure about this one as there are Goodjion's on both sides of the family and the spelling is different than any of the numerous versions I've seen for Goodjohn but:
He came to America about 1760. He worked for the King of England for 18 years and was able to accumulate several hundred acres of land in South Carolina and Georgia. He owned a nice brick home in South Carolina which was burned during the Revolutionary War. He was in command of the British troops in the Battle of Augusta and Savannah, Georgia. When the Americans captured these cities and the war ended, his property (about 1800 acres) in Georgia was confiscated. In 1784 he returned to England to try to persuade King George III to reimburse him for his loss. Its not known if he was able to get the King to help him.

Birth 6 SEP 1736 Saint Michael Paternoster, London, London, England
Death 1790 Washington, Tennessee, United States

John and Olive Essick

John and Olive Essick were the owners of the "Essick" house on Oak Street in Murphysboro, IL

John Elmer Essick

When John Elmer Essick was born on June 29, 1875, in Olney, Illinois, his father, Samuel, was 33 and his mother, Susanna, was 32.  He lived in Bonpas, IL in 1880 when he was 5 years old.

In 1900 he was a border in the home of Henry and Ellen Smith of Pomona, IL.

and was working as a Laborer for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company.

He married Olive (Ollie) Catherine Hagler in 1906 in Alto Pass, Illinois. The 1910 Census show him living at 1804 Elm St. in Murphysboro, IL.  He is now a Bridge Foreman for the M&O RR Co. and has two Nephews living with them. Newton and Homer Stivers.  John is 34 and Olive is 28.

The census for 1920 has John and Olive still living at 1804 Elm with Olive and her mother  Mary Dugan. Also in the household is John's Niece Adeline Essick and Olive's Niece Flora Deegan and Niece Carrie Stivers. Quite a full house and puzzling for the size of the house and the fact that the 1925 Tornado has not occurred yet.

In  1930, the Essicks have moved to Oak St.  John is 53 and Olive is 48. This is after the 1925 Tornado.  We wonder if the house on Elm was destroyed.  The Census now has Marie Danner as a Border.  Marie is a Relative by Marriage.  Marie's brother Jack Danner is married to Mary Ellen Essick John Essick is her cousin.  Beulah Hagler is also listed as a Niece, She is Olive's Niece. Also Flora Deegan is listed as a Boarder and is 27 years old working as a saleslady at a Dry Goods Company. Mary Dugan, Olive's mother is still alive but no longer living in the Essick House. It's not a big house but houses 5 adults.

Interesting as Mary Dugan again appears in the household wit John and Mary Essick in 1940 with Maxine DeWitt.  We do not know how Maxine is related but a John DeWitt was killed in the Tornado. Also an Elmer Stivers.

He died on December 12, 1948, in Murphysboro, Illinois, at the age of 73, and was buried there.

He was a Bridge Foreman for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company. A draft Card shows him missing his right index finger but no indication that exempting him from Service. He was 43 at the time so a bit old for the service anyway.
