John and Olive Essick were the owners of the "Essick" house on Oak Street in Murphysboro, IL
John Elmer Essick
1875–1948
When John Elmer Essick was born on June 29, 1875, in Olney, Illinois, his father, Samuel, was 33 and his mother, Susanna, was 32. He lived in Bonpas, IL in 1880 when he was 5 years old.
In 1900 he was a border in the home of Henry and Ellen Smith of Pomona, IL.
and was working as a Laborer for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company.
He married Olive (Ollie) Catherine Hagler in 1906 in Alto Pass, Illinois. The 1910 Census show him living at 1804 Elm St. in Murphysboro, IL. He is now a Bridge Foreman for the M&O RR Co. and has two Nephews living with them. Newton and Homer Stivers. John is 34 and Olive is 28.
The census for 1920 has John and Olive still living at 1804 Elm with Olive and her mother Mary Dugan. Also in the household is John's Niece Adeline Essick and Olive's Niece Flora Deegan and Niece Carrie Stivers. Quite a full house and puzzling for the size of the house and the fact that the 1925 Tornado has not occurred yet.
In 1930, the Essicks have moved to Oak St. John is 53 and Olive is 48. This is after the 1925 Tornado. We wonder if the house on Elm was destroyed. The Census now has Marie Danner as a Border. Marie is a Relative by Marriage. Marie's brother Jack Danner is married to Mary Ellen Essick John Essick is her cousin. Beulah Hagler is also listed as a Niece, She is Olive's Niece. Also Flora Deegan is listed as a Boarder and is 27 years old working as a saleslady at a Dry Goods Company. Mary Dugan, Olive's mother is still alive but no longer living in the Essick House. It's not a big house but houses 5 adults.
Interesting as Mary Dugan again appears in the household wit John and Mary Essick in 1940 with Maxine DeWitt. We do not know how Maxine is related but a John DeWitt was killed in the Tornado. Also an Elmer Stivers.
He died on December 12, 1948, in Murphysboro, Illinois, at the age of 73, and was buried there.
He was a Bridge Foreman for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company. A draft Card shows him missing his right index finger but no indication that exempting him from Service. He was 43 at the time so a bit old for the service anyway.Life Story Family
